January 2014 Crochet along party!

Post by Dangerkitty on Thu Jan 02, 2014 1:25 am

For 2014 we are starting something new! We will be crocheting a project a month for the next 12 months.  Each project will be small to medium in size and complexity, as I don't want them to interfere too much with your existing UFO's. We will break each  project into 4 weeks and I will post videos and pictures as needed to help those along.

These patterns are something that we will learn together, and share our experiences.  This will help build our sense of community and pool our knowledge!

To go along with the theme of new beginings we will starting our year of crochet alongs with a yoga bag!!!!

http://yogahound.co.uk/2012/01/crochet-yoga-bag-pattern.html

January 1-7th working on rows 1-11
January 8- 22nd  rows 12-30
January 23-31st  handles and finishing!

Let's have fun this 2014!

Wow! I actually know someone that could use this! I need to see what I have available here as I am not buying anything this year except to finish a UFO. So I may have to use what I have available.

As much as I would like to join this I am going to pass on this one for January. I am not the best at crocheting and really can't see myself concentrating on this at this time. Sorry. But I will be here to cheer everyone on!

I had to ask hubby to print this out for me so I can follow it while on the couch.

But my main question is what can I use insted of Patons Wool Blend Aran? I cannot use real wool, not even in a blend.

I was planning on using a cotton, or acrylic. Probably more of a cotton as that holds up to a lot of stress. Just be careful of getting it wet.

OK, so long as everyone thinks it is ok to use something else Smile
However, for some crazy reason I do not have an answer for, when hubby printed it, the chart did not print! Anyone else have that problem or was it just me?

Hubby said he is going to try again as he did not notice one part did not print. I copied and pasted in the directions into an email to him. So I may be behind on this, but hopefully will be able to get caught up soon.

Yay for learning! So I have now torn out this project about 5 times already! I first came up with this picture.

Then after a little encouragement and help from the boyfriend, we got something closer to this.

Lesson learned, Count all your stitches. Counting is very important in this pattern!

What are your bags starting to look like? Anyone got to the diamond parts? I will post a picture after the first set of diamonds. =)

The diamonds are scaring me, LOL! So not there yet, but thanks for the tip to make sure I count because I tend to forget and start guessing, especially if hubby is talking, which he is doing a lot of lately, giggles!
I actually may try to get started in this today. Just need hubby to reroll to balls of yarn so I can. I am going for two shades of green Smile

YAH! I selected colors! LOL!

Hmm, maybe mine should talk to yours, giggles! My hubby can do some simple crochet if I 'translate' the patterns into English for him and is amazing with hats on the knifty knitter! I did have to tell him my sewing machine is off limits unless he wants to pay the bill to fix it, giggles!

Oh I am behind! I was just checking to see how many rows I need to do to be caught up (all while being proud I just finished rows 1-6) and discovered I am STILL behind! giggles!!!
Need to cook lunch now and then I will get back at it. I will need to watch the video for the tapetry part as I don't think I have done that before and if I did, I did not know that is what it was called, LOL!
So the goal today is to get closer to row 30 than I am now, giggles!

Has anyone tried the diamonds yet?

I have yet again learned something! You must actually do the tapestry stitch for it to look right. For example: The stitch before the actual diamond color you need to start with your color A then finish the stitch with Color B. Then complete half the stitch with color B then continue with B 14 stitches before you start the above pattern again.

Make sense?

I will get the boyfriend to help with picture examples soon!

Trust me when I say this weekend I will be hitting this project hard. I have been making squares at work for WUA. And my blankets I will be giving to family this year for Yule!

OK, I am sooo not sure what I did but I had issuses trying to make sure I had the right stitches on rounds 9-11. I think I was losing count as people thought I could count and talk to them at the same time. However, tomorrow, I will start on round 12 and pray as I go, LOL!

I hope you guys are doing well! I will say this project is a little more complicated than I first thought. This rows 12 on can be challenging, just remember to count. I had taken a pen to my pattern and wrote down how many stitches for the off color on each row. It has been making this bit a little easier.

What have you been doing to get this working? Any tips or tricks?

Well, I discovered not having the chart printed out is a bad thing! So I sent the chart to hubby via email so he could print it out Monday at work.

I must say that this has challenged my comfort zone, which is exactly why I attempt to work on this. I know I am not going to finish this, but I am moving forward while I learn and become more comfortable with the techinques. Turns out the person I was making it for no longer attends yoga classes, LOL! Which, actually took a great deal of stress out of the project for me, whew! BUT I seriously want to make that pointy pattern so that I can say I know how, LOL! So moving forward slowly but surely with this.
