April 2012 Mystery Crochet along - Pattern Complete

I will say the finished size is adjustable. But that is my only hint
I will post new steps in the first post so check this part each week for new steps. i will post in the thread that new ones are posted as I post them. This is a "stash buster" so if you have yarn you were wondering what to do with, here is a great option.

What you will need:
4-ply yarn is used
4 skeins each of 3 different colors. Greater contrast the better but they need to compliment each other as well. 3 skeins of a color of your choice.
G hook

Instructions:
Start with main color for border. Ch 245 and cut yarn.

Border:
Rows 1-5: Sc in each st across with Main color.
Row 6: Sc in 2 sc, 1 dc, [19 sc, 1 dc] end with 2 sc. Be sure to skip 1 sc behind each dc.
Repeat pattern in [ ].
Switch to Color 1
Row 7: 3 sc, 1 dc, [17 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc, 1 dc].
Row 8: 4 sc, 1 dc, [15 sc, 1 dc, 3 sc, 1 dc].
Row 9: 5 sc, 1 dc, [13 sc, 1 dc, 5 sc, 1 dc].
Switch to Color 2
Row 10: 6 sc, 1dc, [11 sc, 1 dc, 7 sc, 1 dc].
Row 11: 7 sc, 1 dc, [9 sc, 1 dc, 9 sc, 1 dc].
Row 12: 8 sc, 1 dc, [7 sc, 1 dc, 11 sc, 1 dc].
Switch to Color 3
Row 13: 9 sc, 1 dc, [5 sc, 1 dc, 13 sc, 1 dc].
Row 14: 10 sc, 1 dc, [3 sc, 1 dc, 15 sc, 1 dc].
Row 15: 11 sc, 1 dc, [1 sc, 1 dc, 17 sc, 1 dc].
Main Color
Row 16: 12 sc, 1 dc, [19 sc, 1 dc] end with 12 sc.

Rep rows 15, 14, and 13.
Rep rows 12, 11 and 10.
Rep rows 9, 8, and 7.

Rep Row 6, then begin pattern again with Row 7.

When afghan reaches desired size, rep rows 1-5 after Row 6 to complete pattern.

So you do the rows in order, then do the rows backwards... example 1, 2, 3 then 3, 2, 1 then 1, 2, 3, then 3, 2, 1 etc.


Tips:
The pattern calls for 4 skeins each, red, gray and white 4-ply yarn, 3 skeins black 4-ply yarn.
To avoid confusion we will call them:
red - color 1
gray - color 2
white - color 3
Black - main
Remember what you are using in place of the suggested colors

Note: Each Row is worked separately; the ending of each row is the same as the beginning of the pattern. Do not turn, leave a 4" end of yarn at the start and end of each row for fringe.

All single crochets [sc] are made in back lps of sts.

All double crochets [dc] are made in front lps of sts in second Row from one being worked on.
Each color at this point has been assigned to a row so when you repeat a row use the color for that row.

I myself am using white for the main and more than just three colors as I am going to only use what I have at the house while sticking to baby colors. So all my soft greens, yellows, pinks, purples and blues are going to help create an interesting combination I am using the white to help pull it all together
I will be making this right along with you.

Oh and I know I sent out a newsletter stating the post would not be put up until April 1st, however, I saw some stopped by yesterday after it went out so I thought I would be nice and post early to give everyone a chance to start digging through their stashes

even if we use more colors we still need 16 skeins?

This really is a simple pattern. It can be intimidating if you see the finished project but so simple that even I can do it This will get you started and show you YOU CAN DO IT! The finished project size will be left up to you. It is sooo difficult to not give away too much information LOL!

Bonnie, for the full size version you will need 12 skeins of multiple colors and 3 skeins of your main color. The main color will help tie it all together

Just a reminder, if you decide you only want the smaller version, you will not need as much yarn to start with. I think my most favirite version I saw of this was with white as the main color and each row was a different color because she was usinng nothing but left over yarn from other projects. The white made it look like she planned the whole thing when in reality, she was just trying to get rid of all those small balls of yarn she had floating aroud.

Instructions have been posted and some tips you will need throughout the project have been added to the first post.

Read all the tips/notes BEFOORE you begin - it really will help.

What do you consider to be a skein?

It does not say, so I am assuming the average size 3.5 ounce size.

Okay. A whole two rows done. Doing beige as my main colour.

I betta get this thing started...whatever it is....I'll start with white....so much goin' on...leavin' shortly for a mornin' at the beach...then I'll start it when I get home

It starts out the same, chain 245. However if you want even bigger you can chain 285

You do not have to use white as your base, you can use any color you want as a base/main color. I myself am usingscrap yarn left over from other projects or whatever I have here because with three large plastic bins of yarn, hubby said, "Stop buying and start using". LOL! He knows most of what I have was given to me from friends/family cleaning out their stashes, but even I agree, the yarn stash is getting out of control (like the fabric stash).

I think this is what I am going to start on tonight. Sounds interesting. Just not sure I have a size G hook.

I will work on mine tonight.

I tried the dc's in the front loop, but I didn't like it. I don't know if it was my tension, but I found it was pulling on the loops too much and it wasn't as long as it should be, so I'm doing it like a dc but going down one whole stitch (not just the front loop). It just seems to work for me better, plus will give the pattern on both sides.

Ok, let me know how it looks (pictures if possiblle) when we get further into this.

I had to force myself to stop on the pattern with where I stopped it here. I got in a groove and was rocking and rolling along last night.

I have a question about the second part....is it skip a sc after each dc?...I don't want to start off confused...lol

Well I only did it on t first row because the desgin looked off whe I tried doing it on the other rows. hmmm... might have should have said something before now? But Lisa was ahead of me on this and I think she got hers ok so far.
OMG do I sound like a hick this morning or what? LOL!!

I think when you're going down to do the dc on the row below, you skip that sc, right? I did it everywhere, so you have the same amount of stitches.
