June 2012 Mystery
June 2012 Mystery
Here at last!
June 2012 Mystery
Check in often as I will post new "clues" throughout the month.
I liked how Lisa did it with giving some hintsduring the week and not havin to wait until the weekend for new hints.
This month we are sewing!
I will give you a hint.... I saw this on a UFO list and have seen posts of people saying they needed to make this and then I found a pattern that could work in the mystery! I took it as a sign and WOO HOO here we are
Materials:
What you'll need:
25 inch long cut of cute fabric
9 inch piece of 1/4" elastic
sewing machine
thread
measuring stick/ ruler
rotary cutter or fabric scissors
Clue #1:
Lay out your fabric, it will already be folded in half lengthwise from the way it lays on the bolt at the store. Keep it folded on that line but make sure to line up your finished edges opposite the fold. Usually, it will have the brand or a white band running across one of them. That edge looks good. It won't fray like the raw edges where they cut your fabric and aren't evenly cut. That doesn't matter, that's what we are going to take care of next. Just make sure the edges that are across from the fold line up. I did mine on a cutting mat so I could easily line everything up. If you don't have one of those, just use the edge of a table/ bar.
Now it's time to even out the side edges. Take your measuring stick/ ruler and put it as close to the edge of the fabric as you can get while maintaining a straight line of fabric from the fold to the finished edge. This is where you will make your cut and have a perfectly straight edge. Cut and repeat on the other side.
Clue #2:
So right now if you took a yardstick and measured your fabric it should be folded over to be around 25"x22". It could be closer to 24 1/2. That is fine.
Now we need to make another cut. This time only 3 inches. Line up your ruler on the left or right side of your now perfectly straight fabric. Count out 2 inches and cut all the way down. Save this 2" strip for later. (The store cut me more than 25" so I had about 4" to cut off.)
NOTE: I am copy/paste from the "pattern" so she is the one speaking, not me
I will post a link to the pattern when the mystery is complete (and you will discover some of my 'editting' then

Re: June 2012 Mystery
Clue #3
Take your ruler and place it as close to the folded edge as you can get while leaving enough room to cut. Cut all the way down the fold separating the layers. You should now have 2 pieces of fabric exactly the same size. Save this little strip for later.
That was the hardest part. All the rest is super easy.

Re: June 2012 Mystery
Ok this should help with the posting of clues.
My posts on the first page will be editted thrughout the month an replaced with clues as we go.
Sewing mysteries tke more words to explain than a crochet or knit pattern and I did not want the first post to be five miles long

Re: June 2012 Mystery
Well, if it isn't a laundry bag, it must be one of those bags where you put all the clothespins and hang it where you put your washed clothes to dry. Oh yes, everybody needs one of those, I'm sure, HA, HA, HA! I may not know a teddy bear when I see it, but I sure know a bear hug when I feel it. Love ya too, Bonnie!!!
But here I am thinking where the piece of elastic comes in? What has to be stretched????

Re: June 2012 Mystery
I have a question already, how wide is the fabric suppose to be? Is it suppose to be 2 inches or 45 inches?

Re: June 2012 Mystery
You start with a piece 25" by width of fabric (usually 45")

Re: June 2012 Mystery
I was wondering what the width was because I have plenty of pieces that are not 45 inches wide, you know, the pieces I have cut out of other things. So now I will go digging for a piece of material that is full width.

I'm going to guess a place to store your plastic bags, like the bags you get at walmart, then you can pull them out of this when we get done!

Re: June 2012 Mystery
I've decided not to participate in this one. While digging for a piece of material that is wide enough I found a whole tub of other things that I don't have on my UFO list! I decided I have way to many things to get done to start another new one, but I will be checking in with all of you!

Re: June 2012 Mystery
Never mind my answer above, I didn't see the elastic when I read it the first time, I agree with CTC on what it is~ I wish we were settled in the new place so I could get to the fabric, my sewing machine is in my trunk of the car, hopefully I can do this later this month...I could use one of these!

Re: June 2012 Mystery
Ok, I just noticed somehing about this pattern.... the way she is telling us to do this can produce two at the same time!
Also, it takes longer to copy/paste/edit the clues or to read the clues than it does to follow them up to this point. I just completed clue #3 and that is will hunting down the fabric and running up and down the stairs to complete each step (and a few IMs between hubby and I
)
A new clue will be posted sometime today. I promse!
